When Linda Joy invited me to become an advisory board member of Aspire Magazine, I got goose bumps. Linda is all about delivering inspiration to women–a mission I could get behind.
Two plus years later, my community has grown significantly, partly through knowing Linda and being part of all that is Aspire magazine [...]

Are you writing a memoir? Worried of putting people to sleep in parts? Or just wishing it had a little more oomph? Most bestselling memoirs are funny, especially the painful ones. Humor helps us transcend our experience and release.
In a week and a half, I’ll be interviewing the brilliant and funny and brilliantly funny Greg [...]

I love teaching in-person workshops–there’s a chemistry that happens when we get together in the flesh and connect as writers.
And I love taking in-person workshops, too. Sometimes, I experience a magical shift; other times I make a lifelong friend. At the International Women Writers Guild summer conference this year, I made two new writer friends.
I [...]

People ask me about the process of getting a literary agent. You probably know you need to submit a query (or meet an agent who says, “Yes, I want to see your proposal”), then submit your book proposal (a significant document often 50-80 pages), then wait.
But what’s it like from the inside? I asked Dr. [...]

I found a response to one of my youtube videos this morning that got me on a roll. After writing a short dissertation in reply, Youtube informed me I only had 500 words to respond. Blog time.
The controversial video is a tongue in cheek joke (and a tad silly). The comment was this:
“Remember, many agents [...]

My Bring Your Book to Life students are preparing for the start of book writing class next month. They’re researching their markets, creating the vision for the their books, and starting to outline. Some are calling me for their book concept consultation.
I love the consultations as we brainstorm to take good ideas and make them [...]

If you’re writing a book proposal, one important number to obtain is the number of books sold for any competitive or complementary books you plan to compare with yours.
Here’s a Book Proposal Secret: For the most part, you want to compare your book to bestsellers and backlist books (books that have been in print a [...]

I recently read Open, Andre Agassi’s autobiography. It’s a great read and I was also struck by how dependent he was on the people on his team. I think that’s true about most successful people–they don’t do it alone. They have great coaches, managers, trainers, strategists, advisers, mentors…
Who are the people on a writer’s team? [...]

My very first coach, Wendy Keilin, taught me to end the year by celebrating the year’s accomplishments. It’s so easy to look ahead and make some crazy list of the 5 million things you plan to accomplish in 2010. You can do that.
Just, first, take a deep breath and enjoy all the gifts of the [...]

An aspiring author recently called me to explore writing coaching to help him write his book. He wondered about hiring a ghostwriter. Generally, I’m all about writing your book yourself. I’ve met too many people who’ve hired ghostwriters and been disappointed.
And most relatively smart people can develop an engaging (or even compelling) style and find [...]
