Authors often ask me about the “Resources Needed to Complete the Book” section of the book proposal. My thinking has always been that there’s no reason to include it. An author’s advance will reflect the publisher’s estimate of how many books they think they can sell and how much competition there is from other publishing [...]

I found a response to one of my youtube videos this morning that got me on a roll. After writing a short dissertation in reply, Youtube informed me I only had 500 words to respond. Blog time.
The controversial video is a tongue in cheek joke (and a tad silly). The comment was this:
“Remember, many agents [...]

A couple of questions came up about literary agents today and I realized it would be a good topic to share with you. It’s easy to get taken advantage of it you don’t know what to look for or even aren’t quite clear on a literary agent’s role.
A student from my most recent Bring Your [...]

It’s always a thrill when my clients’ books come out and I get that brown cardboard package from Amazon. When Deb Scott finally announced that her book was here, though, I found it especially fulfilling.
Deb had some huge setbacks in her process…making her a great example for the role or perseverance in the life of [...]

A client recently asked me to help him with a book proposal with very short chapters. Hmmm. I hadn’t worked on one of those before. Would the usual 1-2 chapters be enough? It seemed to me that agents would want more of a sample. But how much? I asked literary agent Jeanne Fredericks for guidance.
Jeanne [...]

It was great to see several blog readers at the Harvard Medical School Publishing Course, including Connor Moore, Jeannette Samanen and Dan Peterson. For those of you who couldn’t make the course, and I know a few of you expressed regret that it didn’t work for you, I’ll be sharing a few pearls of wisdom [...]

One of my clients sent me an e-mail tempted to invest $2,700 to $5,500 to be a contributor in a book that would feature articles by three famous authors (I won’t name names here) and a whole bunch of other “investors” who would get their articles published.
The e-mail touts this as a fast way to [...]

What would you do in her shoes? Today I received an e-mail from a client asking me “writing coach” advice. I’ve changed a few details to protect her anonymity. It’s the kind of question you might be asking yourself, even if you don’t have a publisher yet.
“Lisa, I was offered a “direct” publishing contract [...]

I recently received the brochure for the 2009 course, Publishing Books, Memoirs and Other Creative Nonfiction, which is offered March 26-28 at Boston’s Fairmont Copley Hotel. Several of my writing coaching clients have told me they’ll be there. Will you?

I often hear questions about literary agents’ fees and book promotion expenses, such as those asked by Kathi McKnight in response to my last post. I’m sure many of my readers, students and writing coaching clients are burning to know the answers; so, rather than answer them in a comment, I decided to write a [...]
