For the Love of Bringing Books to Life: Write, Publish, and Be Known
Preparing for Harvard Medical School’s CME Publishing Course
As I go over my notes for “Writing for Your Reader: How to Write a Smart, Compelling, Enlightening Page Turner,” a workshop I’ll be delivering Saturday, along with Martha Murphy, as part of Harvard Medical School’s CME Publishing Course, I’m getting excited. The 3-day course is always filled with exciting book ideas, brilliant physicians and medical professionals, talented agents, publishers and others in the publishing industry. The course Director, Julie Silver, MD, varies the presentations each year–there will certainly be some new perspectives and interesting discourse. I’m looking forward to connecting with colleagues, including Rusty Shelton, whose talented team at[...]
Write a Book? What Have I Gotten Myself Into?
During a consultation with a newly enrolled Bring Your Book to Life participant, Ariel shyly admitted that she was a bit afraid I might give her a hard time for not getting started on the course materials before our session. After all, she’d been beating herself up for days. Wouldn’t I do the same? Ariel committed to my book writing program and then her life seemed to fill with other commitments–a trip to Europe for work, trips to visit family members and, of course, all those little interruptions that make it impossible to get started–meal preparation, errands, a client project…you[...]
How to Write a Book: Video Answers to Your Book Writing and Publishing Questions
When you’re writing a book, many questions crop up—from those first steps to get started to more specific issues like whether to collaborate with a co-author (and how to find one) to whether it’s worth getting an agent or traditional publisher. I look forward to posting a couple more videos and giving you some of my most effective tips for starting and writing a book on the “Birth Your Book” call, March 7.[...]
We Are a Community of Writers: An Opportunity to Help
This afternoon, I finally looked at my e-mail from the past day and a half. The e-mail from Barbara Schultz shocked me. For the past eight weeks, each of us in my Bring Your Book to Life Program had gotten to know and love some of the animals on Barb’s farm through the stories she wrote–and the quirky, detailed picture she painted of each–Calyx, the infertile Llama who surprised Barb one day when she unexpectedly–at least to the humans on the farm–gave birth to a beautiful brown baby llama, Tina the wild turkey that landed on the farm one day[...]
How to Write a Book: Starting Small
Some people have the drive to write their first book and dive right in figuring they’ll learn what they need along the way–either with a book writing program, coaching, editing or trial and error. Many other people struggle and wait, unsure whether they should write their book–”Do I have what it takes?” “Is my idea original enough?” “Will anyone ever read it?” One way to start to answer these questions it to start small. Write about your subject in an article or blog post. Write in small bursts and see how you feel. Are you enjoying the writing? Does it[...]
