Day 2: October Journaling Adventure with The Joy of Writing Journal

Lisa Tener Joy of Writing Journal

Welcome to Day 2 on the journey through The Joy of Writing Journal. Here I share an excerpt from my journey and I hope you will share something about yours—an excerpt, an insight, a challenge, a joy…

Journaling helps me derive meaning. In this excerpt, I begin to find meaning in my own resistance to writing…

…I pull the rock out of the earth

Scoop my hand in the dirt hole

A slimy worm

A root

The scent of earth

My brain too stupid or lazy to describe the smell

Too dull for metaphor

Too wet to catch fire

Dig

Dig

Dig

WIll I find something? Anything?

Lisa- there is something so visceral and honest in your writing that I immediately connect to and am in awe of. I for sure have a lazy brain! I see why so many before me have attested to their admiration of your work. I am excited about these October days…

    • Lisa Tener says

Mary Ann, I have experienced that Lazy brain writing many times. But we keep writing and we dig deeper over time!

Day 2 – Prompt – Writing allows me to have a Voice

When I write, it is a way to listen to myself. In our busy world, I notice people do not have the capacity or time to listen. Listening is truly an Art form. Most times, others may hear my words, but they do not take them in for a deeper understanding of the speaker’s intent. Often, a feeling of loneliness enveloped my space leaving me feeling unheard and unseen. Writing has become my therapist, offering me solace, though it was not my original intent. I pose the question,” Do I listen to myself”? Truthfully, there are times I do not! Until, I started writing. I am amazed and grateful how healing writing can be. It is an opportunity to to learn how to create the best for ourselves.

    • Lisa Tener says

Wow, Deborah. That is a powerful question. And I am so glad you have found this healing and gift in writing. You are not alone!

  3. Jen Pen says

Sharing my writing with another person makes me feel alive and awake. In my nonfiction, narration essays I record a human experience I have noticed – uniquely seen by me – but in sharing my words that experience is now is known by someone else. Hearing someone giggle at just the right spot as I read aloud is powerfully felt in my soul. In such a good way!
