3 Easy Ways to Outsmart Your Inner Critic and Write Prolific!

That inner critic can dampen creative enthusiasm, motivation, and productivity. When we start writing and hear that self-critical voice arise, it can put us in a tailspin.

The trick is to start from a different place that’s nourishing and joyful. Connect with your inner muse or creative source; the critic doesn’t stand a chance.

Outsmart Your Inner Critic

Lisa Tener Book Writing Coach
  1. Consult your muse: Try my meet-your-muse guided visualization and ask your muse to help you believe in yourself and your writing.
  2. Make a list: If the critic tells you no one will read the book, list all the reasons they will. If the critic says you’re a crummy writer, list all the evidence you have to the contrary. If you still feel stuck, ask a trusted friend to talk you down and help you make the list.
  3. Breathe. Or Move. Well, that’s what my upcoming book is all about: using simple, easy breathing techniques and mindful movement to tap into your creativity. Slow, deep abdominal breathing is scientifically proven to enhance creativity—a great place to start. And if you think, “I’m not a meditator. I can’t sit still,” I’ve got you covered. More to come on this topic, but try this simple breathing practice for now.

This Book Will Silence the Critic and Make Your Creative Spirit Soar

In my upcoming book, Breathe. Write. Breathe., you’ll learn 18 beautiful and easy practices from ancient wisdom traditions (yoga, qigong and others) to help you access a creative flow state, bypass the critical inner voice, and transform self-doubt into boundless inspiration.
